Gabrielle Caponegro Named Women's Basketball Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gabrielle "GiGi" Caponegro led Gardner-Webb to a 54-49 win over Davidson last Wednesday with her first career double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds. For her efforts, she was named the Big South Conference Player of the Week.
After sitting out the 2017-18 season due to transfer rules, Caponegro (LIU-Brooklyn / Allenwood, N.J. ) has made an immediate impact for the Runnin' Bulldogs, who are 3-1 through four games with wins over Florida, Warren Wilson and Davidson.
The Allenwood, N.J. native shot 5-of-11 from the field against the Wildcats and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. She pulled down 15 boards, five of which gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a second chance on the offensive end. Caponegro was just three boards away from a double-double at the half, having scored 10 points and collected seven rebounds. Over the final 20 minutes of action, she shot 3-for-3 from the floor and nabbed eight rebounds.
For the year, she is averaging 7.3 points per game and a team-best 8.5 rebounds. Her 34 rebounds are second in the Big South Conference, while her average of 8.5 per game places her fifth overall. She is Gardner-Webb's first Player of the Week winner for the 2018-19 season.
Caponegro and the rest of the Runnin' Bulldogs will be idle this week before returning to action at home on Monday, November 26 against the Pfeiffer Falcons. Tipoff between Gardner-Webb and Pfeiffer is set for 6 p.m. inside Paul Porter Arena.
