February 13, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb midfielders Amanda Steinmuller and Talen Francis each earned Big South Conference women's lacrosse weekly honors, as selected and announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Steinmuller (Ellicott City, Md. / Mount Hebron HS) was named Player of the Week and Francis (Kennesaw, Ga. / Kell HS) was named Freshman of the Week for their efforts in Gardner-Webb's historic win at Wofford Saturday.
Steinmuller etched her name into another corner of the GWU record book Saturday, scoring a career and program-record eight goals in the 21-11 victory. The senior standout added two assists to finish with 10 points in the win.
She did her damage on just 10 shot attempts, shooting 80.0 percent and putting all 10 shots on cage. She was also active on defense, causing one turnover and fielding one ground ball.
Steinmuller set or tied program single-season marks for goals and assists last season and is the program's all-time leader with 92 career goals, 30 assists and 122 points in 52 career games.
Francis used her speed well in her collegiate debut, scoring three goals and helping establish a quick pace in a strong effort. She scored the second goal of the game to create momentum, and added a pair of goals in the second half to power a Gardner-Webb run that helped the Runnin' Bulldogs pull away.
Saturday's win was Gardner-Webb's first ever in a season opener – in the program's fourth season. It also marked the team's first game with more than 20 goals scored and was only the second road win in program history.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action twice this weekend, opening the home slate on Friday against Cincinnati. First draw is set for 5:00 pm in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium. GWU will host East Carolina on Sunday (Feb. 18) at noon.
