BOILING SPRINGS – Quinnipiac jumped out a 7-1 lead at halftime and went on to an 18-9 women's lacrosse win over Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium.
Gardner-Webb (2-6) battled back after falling behind in the opening 30 minutes, scoring five goals in the first 14:37 of the second half – and pulling within 10-6 on
Abby Hanscom's second goal of the half.
Hanscom scored off a free position shot with 16:43 to play to pull Gardner-Webb within 10-5, then took a feed from
Amanda Steinmuller with 15:43 to play to cut Quinnipiac's lead to 10-6.
The Bobcats seized control from there, scoring three goals in a row to go up 13-6 on an Allison Kuhn goal with 12:35 to play. Gardner-Webb cut into the lead once again on a
Lindsey Lippert goal with 11:43 left, but Quinnipiac responded with four in a row to thwart the comeback attempt.
Em Dyment (3:47) and
Maddie Martin (3:09) scored back-to-back quickly to cut the lead to 17-9, but Quinnipiac capped the scoring with 2:05 left for the final margin.
Ashley Bobinski led the way for the visitors, scoring five goals on five shots as well as dishing off four assists. She had a hand in five of the Bobcats' seven first-half goals, scoring three times and assisting twice.
Kuhn had four goals for Quinnipiac, with the Bobcats holding a 32-29 shooting edge for the game.
The game was marred by turnovers, with the two teams combining for 47 over 60 minutes of action.
Gardner-Webb was led offensively by Hanscom, who finished with three goals and an assist. Dyment added three goals, Lippert had two and Steinmuller finished with a team-high four assists.
Maddie Martin had seven draw controls to go with her goal and
Monique Martin had eight ground balls.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will hit the road for their next test, traveling to face Davidson on Wednesday, March 21. First draw is set for 6:30 pm.
