April 26, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb women's lacrosse had a program-record four student-athletes honored as All-Big South Conference selections Thursday with the release of the league's annual awards.
Talen Francis (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Abby Hanscom (Eden Prairie, Minn.) each earned second-team All-Big South Conference honors, while Monique Martin (Tyngsborough, Mass.) and Amanda Steinmuller (Ellicott City, Md.) were named honorable mention All-Big South Conference.
Hanscom, who carries a 3.30 cumulative GPA in nursing, was also named to the league's annual All-Academic Team.
Francis earned Freshman of the Week honors three times during her first campaign with the Runnin' Bulldogs, and tied the program's freshman scoring record with 44 points. Francis finished her freshman campaign with 32 goals, 12 assists, 34 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers from the midfield. She also ranked second on the team with 38 draw controls.
Hanscom was named second-team All-Big South for the second season in a row, finishing third on the team with 24 goals, adding four assists, 25 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. She, along with Francis and Steinmuller, played in each of Gardner-Webb's 17 games.
Martin returned to the All-Big South squad after redshirting in 2017, and was once again one of the league's most formidable defensive players. The senior standout led the team with 49 ground balls in 16 games and also paced the team with 25 caused turnovers.
Martin wrapped up her career as the all-time leader for the Runnin' Bulldogs in each of those categories.
Steinmuller earned her third consecutive All-Big South nod, which is a Gardner-Webb record. It adds to a laundry list of records – career, single-season and single-game – for one of the program's pioneers.
Steinmuller finished the 2018 season with a single-season record 39 goals and 22 assists, breaking her own mark set one year ago. She tallied a team-high and school-record 61 points to go with 19 ground balls, 36 draw controls and 11 caused turnovers.
She set a new single-game mark with eight goals and two assists in the season opener at Wofford (February 10), earning Big South Player of the Week honors in the process. Steinmuller finished her career as the program's leader in career goals, assists and points.
Gardner-Webb recently completed its fourth season on the field, and will welcome back 10 of its top-12 scorers from this past season for the 2019 campaign.
