Prebble Among 10 Finalists for Schutt Sports/NFCA Freshman of the Year Award
May 10, 2018 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Just two days after being the first Big South Conference softball athlete to be named both the Player and Freshman of the Year, Katie Prebble was announced as a Top 10 Finalist for the Schutt Sports/NFCA Freshman of the Year Award.
Prebble was named to the Top 25 List on April 19 and made the final 10 today thanks to her stellar freshman campaign which has seen her break both Gardner-Webb and Big South Conference records alike.
Not only did she break the Gardner-Webb single season home run record (March 10 v. Campbell), but she also became the Big South Conference freshman home run record holder (April 8 v. Charleston Southern).
For the year, she finds herself in the Gardner-Webb record book as the leader in single-season home runs, RBIs and total bases.
Among national stats leaders, she is ranked in six categories and leads the nation in total bases.
Prebble is currently hitting .442 with 22 home runs and 70 RBIs. She has 68 hits on the year, and exactly half of those have been for extra bases. Prebble has scored 49 runs, collected 149 total bases. She's stolen eight bases in ten attempts and has a slugging percentage of .968. Her on-base percentage is .526.
When the initial list of the 25 candidates came out, Prebble was one of our four first baseman, joining Patricia Awald (Kennesaw State), Danielle Gibson (Arizona State) and Alison Seng (Boise State).
Of the 10 remaining finalists, she is the only first baseman and the lone player from a non-Power 5 school.
The Schutt Sports / NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year finalists list will be trimmed to three on Wednesday, May 23. The trophy will be presented during a live ceremony at the Women's College World Series banquet on May 29.
