
Mitchell Sets GWU Shot Put Record in Day Two of Big South Championships

HIGH POINT, N.C. – One school record along with six PRs were set as the Runnin' Bulldogs took part in the second day of the 2018 Big South Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Vert Stadium in High Point, N.C.
The women's team currently sits in fifth place, while the men's squad currently ranks sixth overall. Liberty currently sits atop both the men's and women's leaderboards.
Sarah Mitchell set a new school record in the women's shot put with a mark of 14.55 meters, besting a mark of 14.41 meters set by Ashlei Alexander in 2012. Mitchell earned All-Conference honors by placing second overall in the event. Cailen Blaire finished in eleventh with a toss of 10.75 meters.
Jordan Smith earned All-Conference honors in the men's shot put, placing second overall with a mark of 16.53 meters. Ross Lucia took home an eighth-place finish at 13.48 meters.
In the women's high jump, Ashleigh Cleveland finished in eighth place with a mark of 1.48 meters.
Cleveland and Amanda Hall wrapped up competition in the women's heptathlon, with Cleveland finishing in sixth with 4,096 points, followed by Hall in eighth with 3,489 points.
In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Ezekiel Martin finished in eleventh, crossing the line at 10:00.62.
Chase Thornhill finished in second in the men's 400-meter run preliminaries, advancing to Friday's finals with a time of 47.67 seconds, setting a new personal record with a time that ranks second in GWU history.
Carlos Williams timed in at a personal best 10.89 seconds in the men's 100-meter dash prelims, placing eighth to move on to Friday's finals. Mason Marshall placed thirteenth at 11.30 seconds, followed by Chris Tobin in fifteenth at 11.68 seconds, both new personal records.
In the men's 800-meter run prelims, Patrick Sastre finished in eighth, timing in at personal best time of 1:54.55 to advance to Friday's finals. Sastre's time ranks as the fifth-best time in program history. Josh Parks timed in at 1:58.23 to finish in eighteenth, and Sam Hermanns placed twentieth with a time of 2:08.17, setting a new PR.
Diviana Forrest placed ninth in the women's 400-meter run prelims with a time of 1:00.10. Hannah Sparacio followed in tenth at 1:01.41, and Kelsey Houser placed twelfth with a personal best time of 1:04.93.
In the women's 100-meter dash prelims, Maya Mallory took home a fourteenth-place result with a time of 13.44 seconds.
Hannah Jones finished in fifteenth place in the women's 800-meter run prelims, clocking in at 2:23.34. Amy Turlington followed with a time of 2:27.37 to finish in seventeenth.
