BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb held an early 1-0 lead, but surrendered four unanswered runs in the middle innings to fall to Charleston Southern by a 4-1 score on Saturday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb (27-23, 12-11 Big South) outhit Charleston Southern (16-32, 6-17 Big South) by a 8-6 margin on the day, but GWU stranded eight baserunners throughout the contest.
Gardner-Webb scored the first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the third inning. With one out,
Ben LaSpaluto roped a double to left field, followed by a single up the middle by
Mason Fox that allowed LaSpaluto to easily cross home plate safely.
The Buccaneers answered in the top of the fourth. Ryan Stoudemire tied the game on the first pitch of the frame with a solo home run off of the face of the scoreboard in right field, and later in the inning CSU took a 2-1 lead after a RBI single by Aaron Miller.
Charleston Southern added to its lead in the top of the sixth, plating a pair of runs on a two-run double by Derek Horton to take a 4-1 advantage.
Tyler Weekley (3-6) earned the win on the mound for the Bucs, lasting 7.2 innings, allowing one run on seven base hits with six strikeouts. Wil Hartsell worked the final inning, allowing no runs on one base hit with a pair of strikeouts to record his first save of the season.
Langdon Wilson (2-2) took the loss for GWU, allowing two runs to score on three base hits while recording three strikeouts in three innings of work.
Isaac Campbell worked 2.1 innings of relief, surrendering two runs on three hits with one strikeout, and
Noah Davis hurled the final 3.2 innings, allowing no base hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Charleston Southern had six players each have a base hit on the day, with Stoudemire (1-for-4, HR, RBI) and Horton (1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) doing the most damage.
Corey Howard had the majority of GWU's hits on the day, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Fox (2-for-4, RBI) and
Eric Jones (2-for-4) also had multiple-hits for the 'Dogs.
Both teams will wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon in the final home game of the 2018 season for the Runnin' Bulldogs. The first pitch is set for 2:00 pm at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.
