Gardner-Webb Drops 7-2 Decision to Charleston Southern in Sunday’s Series Finale

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Charleston Southern scored all of its runs in the final two innings to hand Gardner-Webb a 7-2 loss in the final home game of the season for GWU on Sunday afternoon.
 
Gardner-Webb (27-24, 12-12 Big South) held a 2-0 lead as play headed to the eighth inning, in which Charleston Southern (17-32, 8-16 Big South) scored four runs to take the lead.
 
The Buccaneers got on the scoreboard for the first time on a RBI infield single by Kyle Vesnesky, which was immediately followed by a three-run home run by Ryan Stoudemire to put CSU on top by a 4-2 score.
 
Charleston Southern expanded its lead in the top of the ninth inning on another three-run home run by Stoudemire.
 
Neither team was able to produce much offense early in the contest until the Runnin' Bulldogs scratched first in the bottom of the fifth inning.
 
Justin Kunz led off the frame with a double to left field, and later on with two outs, Ben LaSpaluto launched the first pitch he saw over the wall in dead center field to give GWU a 2-0 lead.
 
It was the LaSpaluto's second home run of the season.
 
Wil Sellers (4-2) took the loss on the mound for GWU, allowing five runs to score on five base hits with one strikeout in 2.0 innings of work.  Landon Mitchell was sharp in his first start since March 29, scattering three base hits while fanning five batters in six innings.  Jarrett Thompson tosses a scores seventh inning, allowing one base hit with one strikeout, and Tyler Johnson allowed two base runners to reach in the top of the eighth, allowing a pair of runs on one base hit while recording no outs.
 
Wil Hartsell (2-4) earned the win for the Bucs, working the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one base hit with four strikeouts. Cody Maw gave up two runs on five base hits with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work in the no decision, while Seth Owens tossed 0.2 innings, giving up a pair of hits with one strikeout.
 
Charleston Southern had 11 base hits on the afternoon, with Vesnesky going 3-for-4 with one RBI, and Stoudemire having a 2-for-5 outing with two home runs and six RBI.
 
GWU tallied eight base hits, paced by LaSpaluto (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Corey Howard (2-for-4).
 
Gardner-Webb hits the road for its final midweek bout of 2018, facing Furman this Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm in Greenville, S.C.
