FARMVILLE, Va. – Gardner-Webb opened the final weekend of the 2018 regular season by defeating Longwood by a 5-1 score at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
Gardner-Webb (28-24, 13-12 Big South) outhit Longwood (16-35, 8-17 Big South) by an 8-4 margin, with half of GWU's base knocks being for extra bases.
Gardner-Webb jumped out to an immediate 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out and the bases loaded,
Eric Jones drove in
Mason Fox on a sacrifice fly to deep center field to give GWU the initial advantage.
The Diamond 'Dogs expanded their lead in the top of the fourth, scoring on a RBI double to right field line by
Luke Kaesmeyer and a RBI triple down the right field line by
Ben LaSpaluto to take a 3-0 lead.
GWU added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning, scoring on a RBI groundout by
Taber Mongero and a bases-loaded walk by
Mickey Dugan.
Longwood threatened to rally in the bottom of the ninth, putting runners on the corners with no outs after a base hit by Eric Crane.
The Lancers got on the scoreboard in the following at-bat, as Antwaun Tucker reached on a RBI fielder's choice, but the potential rally would end as Nathan Iskowitz would ground into a double play to end the game.
Landon Mitchell (4-4) earned the win on the mound for GWU, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one base hit with a pair of strikeouts.
Bradley Hallman worked three innings in the start, scattering two hits with three strikeouts.
Langdon Wilson hurled 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits with two strikeouts, while
Caleb Bissette recorded no outs in the ninth, allowing one base hit, and
Jarrett Thompson recorded the final three outs, allowing no base hits.
Cody Boydstun (2-7) took the loss for the Lancers, working 8.1 innings in the start, allowing five runs on eight base hits with three strikeouts. Todd Moxey recorded the final two outs.
Kaesmeyer (2-for-4, 2 2B, RBI) and LaSpaluto (2-for-4, 3B, RBI) paced the Gardner-Webb offensive attack.
Eric Crain (2-for-3) had two of Longwood's four base hits on the day.
Both teams will face each other in doubleheader play beginning tomorrow at 12:00 pm to wrap up the 2018 regular season.
