Gardner-Webb Falls to Longwood, 10-3, to Open Sunday's Doubleheader

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood jumped out to an early lead to go on to hand Gardner-Webb a 10-3 loss in Sunday's lid-lifter.

Longwood seized control of the contest early, plating their first run of the day on a RBI sacrifice bunt by Nate Blakeney in the bottom of the first.  Two more runs would score in the frame, one on a balk by GWU pitcher Aaron Stewart that allowed Justin Mitchell to cross the plate, and the second on a RBI double by Antwaun Tucker, giving the Lancers a 3-0 advantage.

Gardner-Webb answered in the top of the third, scoring its first run of the bout on a failed pick off that allowed Justin Kunz to score from third base.  One more run was pushed across the plate in the inning on a RBI knock to right field by Corey Howard that set the score at 3-2.

The Lancers expanded their lead to two runs in the bottom of the third on a RBI single by Tucker.

Longwood put the game out of reach in the fifth, as Jawan McAllister launched a three-run home run over the left field fence to take a 7-2 lead.

The 'Dogs plated one run in the top of the eighth on a RBI double by Mickey Dugan, but Longwood would respond with three runs in the bottom half of the inning take a 10-3 advantage.

Stewart (2-1) took the loss on the mound for GWU, allowing two earned runs on a pair of base hits with one strikeout in 1.1 innings of work in the start.  Noah Davis worked three innings from the bullpen, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits while fanning three batters.  Carey Spratlin tossed 3.0 innings, allowing two earned runs to score on four base hits with two strikeouts.  Zach Duncan recorded one out, allowing one run on two base hits, and Patrick Morton recorded the final out of the eighth, coaxing a ground out from the one batter he faced.
