Men Sixth, Women Seventh After First Day of Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Gardner-Webb earned one individual championship while setting five new personal records in the opening day of the 2018 Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Vert Stadium in High Point, N.C.

After the first day, the men's team is in sixth place, while the women's team sits in eighth place. Both of Liberty's men's and women's teams lead overall.

Jordan Smith took home the men's discus throw championship with a mark of 48.97 meters, four meters better than the second place finisher. Ross Lucia placed seventh with a career-best toss of 41.96 meters, and Kenny VanVorst finished twelfth with a distance of 33.81 meters.

VanVorst also took home a tenth-place finish in the men's javelin throw with a mark of 29.45 meters.

In the women's discus throw, Sarah Mitchell placed sixth with a mark of 41.51 meters. Cailen Blaire earned a tenth-place finish with a distance of 33.30 meters.

Austin Evans placed twelfth in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.15 meters.

In the women's javelin throw, Amanda Hall placed ninth with a mark of 31.85 meters, followed by Ashleigh Cleveland at 26.50 meters, placing tenth.

Hall and Cleveland also completed four of the seven events in the women's heptathlon, with Cleveland ranking third with 2,614 points and Hall in eighth with 2,191 points. Cleveland placed second in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 26.96 seconds and third in the high jump with a mark of 1.53 meters. Hall earned a fourth-place finish in the shot up with a toss of 10.20 meters.

Sydney Davis took home a twelfth place result in the women's 10,000-meter run, crossing the line at 43:17.78, a career-best time in the event.

In the prelims of the men's 200-meter dash, Carlos Williams placed seventh with a career-best time of 21.91 seconds to move on to the finals. Austin Billiot timed in at 23.47 seconds to finish in fifteenth place, a new personal record.

Ezekiel Martin placed ninth in the in the men's 400-meter hurdles prelims, timing in at 57.27 seconds, setting a new personal record.

In the women's 200-meter dash prelims, Diviana Forrest finished twelfth with a time of 25.44 seconds, followed by Kira Ramsey in sixteenth with a time of 26.74 seconds.
