HARRISONBURG, Va. – Despite leading, 1-0 at halftime, Gardner-Webb fell in overtime to Virginia Tech, as the Hokies scored the game-winning goal in the 108
th minute.

Grant Glorioso showed great poise in goal for us. Hats off to Virginia Tech, they played a great game and got the better of us, tying the game in the second and ultimately succeeding in overtime. Our team really battled hard today, and I couldn't be prouder of the effort everybody gave. We're looking forward to a solid week of training and will be ready for the home opener on Friday."
Virginia Tech had two shots on goal in the first 23 minutes, but Glorioso saved both, and the Runnin' Bulldogs drew first blood in the 33r
d minute.
With 13 minutes remaining until halftime,
Mads Rismoen scored Gardner-Webb's first goal of 2018, receiving a pass from
David Koprowski from 20 yards out, dribbling five yards and connecting, giving the 'Dogs an early 1-0 lead.
The Hokies would take two more shots on goal before the end of the period, but neither shot got past Glorioso, who collected four of Virginia Tech's attempts in the opening period.
In the second, the Hokies controlled the pace early, taking eight of the first nine shots among the teams.
Alain Delgado was the only Runnin' Bulldog to attempt a shot early in the second period. His shot in the 49
th minute was wide of the net.
After controlling the pace for much of the early portion of the second half, the Hokies got the equalizer in the 64
th minute as James Kazak sent a ball to Chris Little who proceeded to head it into the right post, tying the game at one.
Over the final 27 minutes of regular,
Ismael Guerrero was the only Gardner-Webb player to attempt a shot. Guerrero sent one over the net in the 83
rd minute, as he was unable to put the visitors back in front.
The Runnin' Bulldogs successfully defended three Virginia Tech corner kicks over the last five minutes of the half to send the contest into overtime.
In overtime, Gardner-Webb's best chance came off an
Edin Hernandez corner kick in the 94
th minute, but Virginia Tech's Marc Hoppler scored in the 108
th minute to give the Hokies the victory. Â
In goal, Glorioso faced 17 shots for Gardner-Webb, allowing two goals and receiving credit for six saves. The Hokies' Mathijus Swaneveld faced 18 shots and made one save in the contest.
Virginia Tech outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs, 18-5 and held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The loss drops the 'Dogs to 0-2-0 on the young season, while the Hokies are 2-0-0.
Gardner-Webb will return to action on Friday, August 31 for its home opener. Kickoff between the Runnin' Bulldogs and Wofford Terriers is set for 7 p.m.
