Gardner-Webb Women's Basketball Announces Non-Conference Schedule

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – First-year head women's basketball coach Alex Simmons announced the Runnin' Bulldogs' 2018-19 non-conference schedule today, which features contests with three teams that played in a postseason tournament last season.
Season Opener – November 6 at Florida
Gardner-Webb will open the season with its first-ever meeting with the SEC's Florida Gators. While it will be the first time that Gardner-Webb and Florida have met on the hardwood, the two head coaches – Simmons and Florida's Cameron Newbauer – are familiar with each other.
Last season, during Newbauer's inaugural year as the Gators' head coach, his team squared off against Ole Miss, where Simmons served as an assistant coach. Simmons and the Rebels got the better of Newbauer on two-of-three occasions, including a 48-43 win in the opening round of the SEC Tournament.
Four-Game Homestand
Following the contest with Florida, Gardner-Webb will play four consecutive contests at Paul Porter Arena, beginning with a tussle with Warren Wilson at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 9.
Two days later, the Morehead Sate Eagles will visit Boiling Springs for a 3 p.m. tip. Gardner-Webb topped Morehead State, 68-60, as part of the Matthew Mitchell Classic at the University of Kentucky last season. Junior Savannah Plentovich was one of three Gardner-Webb scorers in double figures in the victory.
Education day will take place on Wednesday, November 14, as local elementary school students watch Gardner-Webb battle in-state rival Davidson. The mid-morning contest will begin at 11 a.m. Last season, the Runnin' Bulldogs defeated Davidson on the road, 70-65, with both Ky'Asia Stanford and S. Plentovich scoring 10 points.
After a 12-day break, Division III Pfeiffer will close out Gardner-Webb's homestand on Monday, November 26. GWU defeated Pfeiffer in last year's season opener, 72-53.
Hitting the Road to Take on Wofford
To close out November, Simmons will take her Runnin' Bulldogs to nearby Spartanburg, South Carolina to face the Wofford Terriers on Tuesday, November 29. Gardner-Webb has won five of the past six contests against the Terriers, including an 18-point win in Boiling Springs last season.
Mount St. Mary's Comes to Boiling Springs
The 'Dogs will look to go 2-0 in the past two seasons against Mt. St. Mary's when the Mountaineers make their first trip to Paul Porter Arena. The Mountaineers and Runnin' Bulldogs will tip off at 6 p.m. on Monday, December 3.
Three Consecutive Road Games Against Tournament Teams
Gardner-Webb will play its first of three consecutive contests against teams that played in a 2017-18 postseason event when it visits Furman on Saturday, December 8. The Runnin' Bulldogs earned their first ever win against the Paladins last year, a 71-57 victory at Paul Porter Arena. Furman finished 18-14 overall and fell to South Alabama in the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitational.
Following the contest at Furman, the 'Dogs won't take the court again until December 16 when they travel north to face Drexel for the first time in program history. The Dragons finished 27-8 last season lost a close battle with Fordham in the second round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament.
Gardner-Webb's northeast road trip continues with another first time opponent – Delaware – on Tuesday, December 18. The Blue Hens also made the WNIT last season but made an early exit, falling to Georgetown in the first round.
Return to Paul Porter Arena
The Runnin' Bulldogs will take a short holiday break before resuming action at home against nearby Converse College. The final home game of 2018 is set for Saturday, December 29 at 3 p.m.
One Last Non-Conference Road Trip
To open the New Year and conclude non-conference play, Gardner-Webb will hit the road to battle Western Carolina. A three-point victory in Boiling Springs last season allowed the Runnin' Bulldogs to even the series at two wins a piece.
The 2018-19 Big South Conference schedule will be released at a later date.
