Women's Basketball Begins Preparations for 2018-19 Season on Tuesday Morning

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb women's basketball ushered in a new era on Tuesday morning as first-year head coach Alex Simmons held the season's first official practice inside Paul Porter Arena.
Simmons, who comes to Gardner-Webb from Ole Miss, inherits a team that went 19-13 last season with an 8-10 mark in Big South play. The 2017-18 version of the Runnin' Bulldogs earned an opening round victory in the Big South tournament before falling to No. 2 seed Radford.
Simmons and assistant coaches Danielle Bell, Garner Small and Chynna Turner have just one senior on the roster – Ky'Asia Stanford. Stanford averaged 9.2 points per game last season and is the only returning player to have started all 32 contests.
Newcomer graduate student Neydja Petithomme (Boca Raton, Fla. / University of Miami) and juniors Carley and Savannah Plentovich (Clearwater, Fla. / Calvary Christian HS) and Morgan Pointer (Greensboro, N.C. / Northwest Guilford HS) round out the upper classmen on the roster.
The Plentovich twins are the second and third leading returning scores from the '17-18 squad. Savannah averaged 8.4 points per game, while Carley scored 7.4 points per contest.
Gardner-Webb's roster consists of eight underclassmen – four sophomores and four freshman.
Three of the eight underclassmen – freshmen Robyn Bouwer (Rotterdam, Netherlands / CTO Amsterdam and Anna Munoz-Vidueira (Hospitalet de IIobregat, Spain / Sant Josep Obrer), , as well as redshirt sophomore Corinna Wiegand (Neuhof-Giesel, Germany / FT Fulda) – are from abroad.
Gardner-Webb will open the 2018-19 campaign at the University of Florida on Tuesday, November 6 at 11 a.m.
