Runnin' Bulldogs Suffer 4-0 Loss to Campbell on Wednesday Night

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs suffered a 4-0 loss to Big South opponent Campbell on Wednesday evening, dropping to 6-6-1 overall and 3-2 in league play.

Gardner-Webb (6-6-1, 3-2 Big South) took seven shots in the match and placed two on goal.

Campbell (11-2-1, 5-0 Big South) scored in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead, and the Runnin' Bulldogs placed their first shot on goal 12 minutes later when Hendrik  Kortgodde fired a strike that was snagged by Samuel Lechuga.

Despite surrendering the first-half goal, Daniel Husa made two saves, while the Gardner-Webb defense cleared a shot off the back line in the 26th minute to keep the Fighting Camels from netting their second goal.

Gardner-Webb put its second shot on goal in the 37th minute when Pedro Benito fired a strike at the net. Jorge Salgado's header at the 37:01 mark went high of the net as the Runnin' Bulldogs could not net the equalizer before the half.

Oskar Wang, the Runnin' Bulldogs' leading goal scorer in 2019, attempted to equalizer early in the second half, and after a save by Husa in the 52 minute, the 'Dogs fired two more shots before the 60-minute mark.

Husa made his fifth stop of the night in the 63rd minute, and five minutes later Benito attempted the 'Dogs' final shot, which was blocked.

With a 1-0 lead, the Fighting Camels were able to extend their lead to four goals before the final horn sounded. Thibault Jacquel's penalty kick in the 69th minute made it 2-0, and the Fighting Camels added goals in the 76th and 81st minutes respectively to extend their advantage to 4-0, which is what the scoreboard read after 90 minutes.

Gardner-Webb took seven shots and placed a pair on target – both in the first half. Campbell doubled the Runnin' Bulldogs in attempts with 14, and put nine on goal. Husa made four saves in the net for GWU, while Lechuga stopped both of the 'Dogs' shots on goal.

"We struggled tonight to put quality looks on goal," said head coach Tony Setzer. "Despite giving up the first half goal, we held them in check until late in the second half, and then Campbell was able to add to their lead. They're a good squad, but we will regroup and look towards a non-conference match with UAB before finishing out league play."

Gardner-Webb will look to return to the win column on Saturday when they head Birmingham, Ala. for a non-conference match with the UAB Blazers. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. EST, and all the action can be seen live on C-USA TV.
