CLINTON, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs went on the road and defeated the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday night.
With the win, the Runnin' Bulldogs improve to 8-7-1 overall and 5-2 in Big South play and lock up the #3 seed for the upcoming Big South tournament. Gardner-Webb is now guaranteed to host a quarterfinal matchup on Sunday, November 10, and has its highest seed for the conference tournament since 2011. In 2011, the 'Dogs were the #2 seed and advanced to the championship match.
"We went on the road and did what we needed to do," said head coach Tony Setzer. "Presbyterian is a good team, and it's always tough to play in Clinton. We continued to battle after Presbyterian equalized and earned the win. We are looking forward to honoring our seniors on Wednesday night and hope to close out the regular season on a high note against a very talented Winthrop squad."
Gardner-Webb (8-7-1, 5-2-0 Big South) struggled to generate attempts in the first half as the 'Dogs' only shot came from Alain Delgado and sailed wide of the net in the 27th minute.
Presbyterian (5-11-1, 2-4-1 Big South) challenged Gardner-Webb's Daniel Husa with a pair of shots on goal – one in the 29th minute – and again in the 41st minute. Husa stopped both with his second save of the half being the more impressive of the two. The sophomore managed to knock the ball away from the goal, and the back line cleared it away to keep things scoreless.
The two teams went into the half with no score, but Oskar Wang changed that just 11 minutes into the final half.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' leading goal scorer dribbled down the right side of the field in the 56th minute of action and sent the ball into the lower left corner of the net for his eighth goal of the season which gave GWU a 1-0 lead.
Presbyterian threatened in the 61st minute, but Sergio Pinto's shot was blocked by the Gardner-Webb defense, and for the next 20 minutes, the score remained unchanged.
Inside the 10-minute mark, the Blue Hose were able to equalize as Zacharia Diallo netted the game-tying goal with 6:53 remaining in regulation.
Gardner-Webb's final shot of the half came from Abel Gebrekiros in the 84th minute, and Presbyterian had two attempts in the final minutes of regulation.
Hunter Del Valle's attempt with 1:38 remaining hit the post and bounced back to Presbyterian. The Blue Hose earned a corner kick with under a minute to go, but their final shot – by Simen Johansen – was blocked.
After 90 minutes, the two teams needed extra time to decide a winner, but Pedro Benito quickly ended the contest in favor of the Runnin' Bulldogs.
In the 92nd minute, Benito dribbled inside the 18 and beat Presbyterian goalkeeper Valentin Kliebe, putting the ball in the back of the net for the game-winner.
The Blue Hose outshot the 'Dogs, 11-5, but both of Gardner-Webb's two shots on goal ended up in the back of the net. Presbyterian placed three shots on target, and Husa saved two. Kliebe did not make a save for the home team.
Gardner-Webb will host Winthrop on Wednesday, November 6 at 6 p.m. in the regular season finale. Prior to kickoff, the coaching staff will honor the team's seniors. Â
