Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Outlasts Butler, 13-12, For Third Consecutive Win

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A tightly contested non-conference women's lacrosse matchup between the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs and Butler Bulldogs ended in favor of Gardner-Webb, 13-12, on Sunday afternoon.

Butler got on the board first, but Gardner-Webb scored three goals in a three-minute span to take a 3-1 lead just nine minutes into the game. Jada Preston, Eilish Gately and Talen Francis scored GWU's initial three goals.

With 6:25 remaining in the first half, Butler cut Gardner-Webb's lead to three, but three unanswered goals over the remainder of the first 30 minutes propelled the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 10-4 halftime lead.

With 5:59 left in the half, Abby Hanscom scored her 10th goal of the year on a free position shot, while Preston and Liz Antoshak also added goals. Antoshak's goal was just her second of the season and came with 1:50 until halftime.

After a goal by Tori Birks gave Gardner-Webb an 11-4 lead less than a minute into the second half, the offensive went cold for the Runnin' Bulldogs, and Butler scored nine unanswered goals to take a 12-11 lead.

Butler's nine goals came in 20:18, and the Bulldogs held a one-goal lead until Antoshak evened things up at 12 with under four minutes to play.

Birks scored the game-winning goal with 2:05 to play, and Butler did not get a shot off over the remaining of the contest. A clear with 24 seconds left helped seal the deal for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

The 13-12 victory was Gardner-Webb's third consecutive win. The Runnin' Bulldogs are now 3-2 overall, while Butler falls to 2-5 on the season.

Butler outshot Gardner-Webb, 31-29, but each team managed 24 shots on goal. Katie Sylvester earned the win for the Runnin' Bulldogs and stopped 12 shots.

Butler's Amanda Rumsey started in goal and surrendered 10 goals in the first half before Katie McGrath entered in relief. McGrath had six saves in the second half but took the loss, giving up three goals.

Offensively, Francis and Pearson combined for six of Gardner-Webb's 13 goals. The Runnin' Bulldogs outhustled the Bulldogs of Bulter, collected 17 ground balls compared to 13 for the visitors. Monique Martin and Em Dyment each had three.

Next up, the Runnin' Bulldogs will travel to Moon Township, Pa. for a battle with Robert Morris at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13.
