CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to take a 6-5 walkoff win against Gardner-Webb in the opening game of a three-game Big South Conference series on Friday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb (9-9, 2-2 Big South) led 5-3 as play headed to the bottom of the ninth. With two on and no outs, Jimmy Marcelli sent one run in on a RBI fielder's choice, and later with the bases loaded, a RBI single by Jeremiah Boyd tied the game. That led to the walkoff base hit by Andrew Livingston to give the Blue Hose the win.
At the onset of the game, Gardner-Webb took an early 2-0 advantage, scoring on a RBI double by
Corey Howard and a RBI single by
Chandler Redmond.
The 'Dogs expanded their lead in the top of the third as Redmond launched a three-run bomb over the center field wall. It was his sixth home run of the season and 38
th of his career, tying the Gardner-Webb career home run record set in 2000 by Sammy Pruett.
Presbyterian began its rally in the bottom of the seventh, plating its first run of the day on a RBI single by Zacchaeus Rasberry, later followed by a RBI single by Nick Guimbarda and a RBI double by Marcelli
The Blue Hose had 13 hits on the day, with Guimbarda leading the way with a 3-for-5 performance with one RBI.
Gardner-Webb collected eight base hits throughout the day, paced by Redmond (3-for-4, 2B, HR, 4 RBI).
Eric Miles (3-1) went the distance on the mound for PC, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight base hits with ten strikeouts while issuing no walks.
Jarrett Thompson (0-1) took the loss for GWU, allowing three runs, one earned, one three base hits in 0.1 innings of work.
Isaac Campbell lasted 6.1 innings in the start, giving up three runs on nine base hits with ten strikeouts.
