Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Preston's Record Day Lifts Gardner-Webb To 19-2 Win Over Delaware State

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb scored 14 unanswered goals to close the first half on a tear, and rolled to a 19-2 win over Delaware State Wednesday in non-conference women's lacrosse action.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-2) won their second in a row behind a record-setting performance from freshman Jada Preston. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native finished the game by shattering the school record for assists, dishing off eight in the win. Preston added two goals to tie the school's single-game record for total points (10).

Preston fed six different goal scorers in the game, with her first assist going to Jessica Vetter at the 29:23 mark of the first half to tie the score, 1-1. Preston then scored twice off of passes from Abby Hanscom to spark a quick run that didn't end until the first half horn sounded.

By that time, Gardner-Webb held a comfortable 14-1 lead that wouldn't be challenged.

Preston had seven of her assists, and both goals, by halftime.

Delaware State (0-2) scored the opening goal of the second half as well, but Gardner-Webb rallied with five in a row for the final margin. The Runnin' Bulldogs passed the ball around often over the final 30 minutes. Preston found a cutting Hannah Mitchell with 1:48 on the clock for the final tally of the game.

Gardner-Webb was dominant for the second game in a row, holding a 32-4 shooting advantage – with 24 shots on cage and 19 finding the back of the net. GWU assisted on 14 of its 19 goals Wednesday, its best passing performance of the season.

In addition to Preston's big day, Gardner-Webb got three goals each from Eilish Gately and Hanscom, two goals from Vetter and Em Dyment and single goals from seven different players. Hanscom added two assists – both two Preston – and Lauren Deaver finished her day with two assists and a team-high four ground balls.

Cierra Ashworth also had four ground balls, one goal and an assist for Gardner-Webb, which played every member of its team that was available for the game. Preston, Vetter and Colleen Conn each had three ground balls, with Conn also causing two turnovers.

Heather Lobas was also active defensively, causing a pair of turnovers to go with three ground balls.

The Hornets' scoring came from Tamrin Swann (29:48, 1st) and Aniya Aiken (28:35, 2nd). Delaware State had 20 turnovers and finished the game with six ground balls. Swann had two of the Hornets' four shots in the game.

Gardner-Webb will remain at home for its next three games, beginning on Sunday, March 10, vs. Butler. First draw is scheduled for noon in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium.
