Gardner-Webb Defeats Charleston Southern, 8-3, Saturday Evening

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb plated eight runs in the top of the eighth inning, propelling the Runnin' Bulldogs to an 8-3 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, Gardner-Webb improves to 16-15 and 7-7 in Big South Conference action, while Charleston Southern drops to 13-25 overall and 3-11 in league play.
 
Taking a 2-1 lead into the top of the eighth, the Runnin' Bulldogs led off the frame with a base hit by Justin Kunz, later followed by a home run to right field by Corey Howard, his first of the season, to push GWU's lead to 4-1.
 
Eric Jones and Chris Clary followed with back-to-back base hits, setting up a RBI single by JP McGuire and sacrifice fly by Mitch McLendon to drive in two additional runs for the 'Dogs.
 
Next up was Jake Phillips, who belted a two-run home run over the left field fence, the first home run of his collegiate career to set the score at 8-1.
 
The Buccaneers scored once in the bottom of the eight on a RBI single by D Blakeney and once more in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by J Litchfield.
 
Charleston Southern scored the first run of the bout in the bottom of the second inning on a base hit by Trend-Beacom.
 
Gardner-Webb answered in the top of the third, leading off the inning with a home run to right field by McGuire, his second home run of the year, to take the lead at 2-1.
 
GWU collected 13 base hits on the evening, with Howard (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI), Jones (2-for-5), McGuire (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI), McLendon (2-for-3, RBI), and Phillips (2-for-2, HR, 2 RBI) each collecting multiple hits throughout the game.
 
Charleston Southern had ten base hits, with J Miller (2-for-4), D Blakeney (2-for-4, RBI), and J Martin (2-for-3, 2B) each having multiple hit outings.
 
Landon Mitchell (3-4) earned the win on the mound for the Runnin' Bulldogs, allowing just one run on six base hits with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.  Jarrett Thompson tossed the final 2.1 innings, giving up a pair of runs on four hits with five strikeouts, recording his seventh save of the season.
 
Cody Maw (2-3) took the loss for the Bucs, giving up two runs on seven base hits with five strikeouts in six innings.  CSU used four relief pitchers, who combined to allow six runs on six base hits over the final three innings.
 
Both teams will wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon, with the first pitch slated for 1:00 pm.  Live coverage of the game will be provided on ESPN+.
