Gardner-Webb Drops Series Finale at Charleston Southern, 10-3, Sunday Afternoon

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern plated six runs in the first two innings to go on to hand Gardner-Webb a 10-3 loss in Sunday's Big South Conference series finale.
 
Charleston Southern (14-24, 4-11 Big South) jumped out to an immediate 2-0 lead over GWU (16-16, 7-8 Big South) as Ryan Stoudemire belted a two-run home run over the center field fence with no outs in the bottom of the first.
 
CSU expanded its lead in the bottom of the second inning.  With the bases loaded, Stoudemire sent another run home on a RBI fielder's choice.  That was immediately followed by a three-run blast by Jason Miler, setting the score at 6-0.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs scored their first run of the afternoon in the top of the third on a RBI fielder's choice by Corey Howard, plating Ben LaSpaluto, who reached earlier in the frame with a base hit.
 
GWU trimmed its deficit to four runs in the top of the fifth as LaSpaluto blasted a solo home run past the left field wall, his second home run of the season.
 
Charleston Southern would put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth, plating one run on a RBI single by Brooks Bryan, followed by a three-run shot to left field by Javon Martin, giving the Bucs a 10-2 lead.
 
Gardner-Webb scored one last run in the top of the seventh inning on a RBI single by Justin Kunz.
 
The Buccaneers totaled 15 base hits on the day, paced by Josh Litchfield and Reid Hardwick, who each had three base hits.
 
GWU had seven hits, with LaSpaluto (2-for-4, RBI, HR) leading that effort.
 
Cam Weinberger (2-3) earned the win on the mound for CSU, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings of work.  Seth Owens tossed 1.2 innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits, while Eddie Hiott recorded one out and RJ Petit tossed the final two scoreless frames.
 
Kyle Ruehlman (3-3) took the loss for the Runnin' Bulldogs, allowing nine runs on 12 base hits in 4.2 innings of work.  Noah Davis recorded four outs, giving up one run on one hit, while Langdon Wilson and Cody Dooley each worked a scoreless frame.
 
Gardner-Webb remains on the road for its next contest, taking on Charlotte this Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm in Hayes Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
