BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Abby Hanscom scored three goals, but Gardner-Webb fell short Saturday in an 18-12 loss at Campbell in Big South women's lacrosse action.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (10-15, 0-5 Big South) fell behind 3-0 over the first nine minutes, before Hanscom scored her 35th goal of the season with 20:28 to play before the half.
Eilish Gately followed off an assist from
Tori Birks to cut the lead to 3-2 with 18:53 on the clock, but Campbell (5-9, 2-2 Big South) would not give up its lead.
The Camels opened up an 8-4 lead with 5:16 to play before intermission, but Gardner-Webb used goals from Hanscom (3:49),
Jessica Vetter (2:32) and
Talen Francis (00:59) to cut the hosts' lead to 8-7. Campbell answered just before the halftime horn, however, getting a goal from Sam Carey with just 24 seconds on the clock for a 9-7 lead.
Gardner-Webb whittled the lead down to one goal once again with 16:41 to play in the game, getting back-to-back goal from
Hannah Smith to trail just 10-9. Campbell put the game away from there, using a decisive, 8-0, run to lead 18-9 with 5:15 to play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would not quit, scoring the final three goals of the day for the final margin.
Hannah Mitchell scored twice in the final minute and
Hailey Maranto had a pair of assists in the late push.
Turnovers were an issue for GWU on Saturday, with 20 miscues helping Campbell's transition game. The Fighting Camels forced 14 of those turnovers and converted 20-of-20 clears.
Gardner-Webb put 22 of its 26 shots on goal, with Hanscom scoring three goals to lead the way. The Eden Prairie, Minn., senior is just one shy of tying the program's single-season goals record (38).
Vetter added two goals for the Runnin' Bulldogs, with Mitchell and Smith also scoring a pair.
Melissa Placek led Campbell with four goals on the day.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting Presbyterian in the 2019 home finale. First draw is set for 4:00 pm in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium.
