SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb men's golf finished just seven strokes out of second place, finishing in a tie for fifth at the 2019 Wofford Invitational Tuesday afternoon.
The two-day, 54-hole event included two rounds on Monday and the final round on Tuesday. The tournament was held at the Country Club of Spartanburg and its 6,648-yard (Par 72) course.
Furman won the tournament by 27 strokes, shooing 25-under par for three rounds. Austin Peay (+2), Radford (+3), USC Upstate (+7), Gardner-Webb (+9) and Belmont (+9) were in the top-5.
Gardner-Webb was paced by junior
Steffen Smith (68-69-79-216), who had a stellar Monday – sitting at 7-under par after 36 holes. The former Greater Atlanta Christian standout came in at even par and in a tie for 11th individually after Tuesday's action.
Patrick Wu (76-70-74-220) finished 30th,
Zack Byers (76-69-76-221) finished in a tie for 31st and
Charles Dallery (75-75-73-223) finished in a tie for 38th.
Andy Yang (79-73-74-226) finished in a tie for 49th for Gardner-Webb.
Furman's Jack Crosby took home medalist honors after shooting a 65 in the opening round. He followed that with a 68 on Tuesday to finish at 13-under par.
Gardner-Webb will break for two weeks before getting back into action at the Southern Intercollegiate in Athens, Ga., on April 15. That event will lead into the 2019 Big South Championship on April 17-20 in Ninety Six, S.C.
