Brooke Perry Earns Second Big South Weekly Honor of 2019 Season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second time this season, Gardner-Webb's Brooke Perry has been named the Big South Conference's softball Pitcher of the Week.

Perry (Clemmons, N.C.) picked up a win and save in last week's three-game series at Charleston Southern.

In Thursday's series opener, Perry was dominant, hurling a one-hitter in which she spent all seven innings in the circle and fanned 12 batters. She began the contest in stellar fashion, striking out the first three Bucs she faced, as of them were caught looking. She once again struck out three batters in the bottom of the third, this time getting each batter to swing at the third strike.

The lone hit she allowed in Gardner-Webb's game one victory was a leadoff single to Annie Bakenhus in the top of the fourth, but a groundout and pair of swinging strikeouts ended CSU's half of the fourth.

The Bucs only got one runner in scoring position the entire game when an error followed by a walk in the fifth gave Charleston Southern two runners on and only one out.  Perry, a Clemmons, N.C. native, got out of the inning and preserved the shutout.

She retired the Bucs in order in the sixth and seventh innings to pick up win 17 on the year.

In the nightcap of Thursday's doubleheader, Perry entered in relief of Reah Barger in the bottom of the fifth. Gardner-Webb held a 4-3 lead at the time but Charleston Southern's Brooklyn Brewington was on second. After allowing one base runner, Perry got out of the inning and limited the damage.

Gardner-Webb extended its lead to 8-3 in the top of the sixth, and Perry surrendered just a walk and double in the sixth and seventh innings respectively as she picked up her second save of the season.

Perry holds a 17-11 record in 2019 with a 2.73 ERA. She has fanned 210 batters and held opponents to a .230 batting average. Additionally, 22 of her 26 starts have been complete games, and she has thrown five shutouts. She becomes the second Runnin' Bulldog to receive a Big South weekly award in the past two weeks, joining last week's Freshman of the Week, Autumn Owen.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will close out the regular season with a three-game series at Hampton on April 27-28. A twinbill is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. with a single game set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
