SHELBY, N.C. – Gardner-Webb belted 14 base hits en route to a 10-1 win over visiting Davidson in midweek baseball action at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C.
Gardner-Webb (14-11) was eight of its nine starters collect base hits, while the pitching held Davidson (14-10) off of the scoreboard until the eighth inning.
GWU jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning.
Eric Jones brought in the first run of the game on a base hit back up the middle, and
Corey Howard later scored on a wild pitch.
The Runnin' Bulldogs added one more run in the bottom of the third on a RBI infield single by Howard.
Gardner-Webb seized control of the bout in the following frame, scoring three runs.
Ben LaSpaluto drove in one run on a RBI double, and RBI singles by
Chandler Redmond and Howard pushed GWU's lead to 6-0.
The Wildcats scratched for the first time in the eighth inning, driving in one run on a RBI single by
Eric Jones.
GWU answered in the bottom half of the eighth, scoring on a RBI single by
Mitch McLendon, a RBI double by
Justin Kunz, a RBI groundout by Redmond, and a RBI single by Jones to put the game out of reach at 10-1.
LaSpaluto paced the GWU offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI, while also crossing the plate twice. Kunz (2-for-5, 2B, RBI), Howard (2-for-4, 2 RBI), and Jones (2-for-5, 2 RBI) each had multiple hits on the evening.
Davidson was held to just five base hits, with Max Bazin leading that effort with a 2-for-3 performance.
Aaron Stewart (2-1) earned the win for the 'Dogs, tossing four scoreless innings, scattering two base hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Noah Davis worked three scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits with three strikeouts.
Luke Williamson tossed the eighth, allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout, and
Chase Lane worked a perfect ninth.
Blake Hely (2-1) took the loss for Davidson, allowing four runs on five hits in three innings on the mound. The Wildcats used a total of eight pitchers on the evening.
The Runnin' Bulldogs host Campbell this weekend, with all three games taking place at Shelby's Keeter Stadium. Friday's game is slated for a 6:00 pm start time.
