
Smallwood, Thornhill Claim Big South Track and Field Weekly Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After strong performances this past weekend, Gardner-Webb's Julian Smallwood and Chase Thornhill earned Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field weekly honors, as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
Smallwood was named the Big South Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, while Thornhill took home Big South Men's Track Athlete of the Week honors for the first time this year.
This past weekend at the Don McGarey Invitational hosted by Kennesaw State, Smallwood set a new personal record in the shot put with a distance of 16.57 meters to take home a third-place finish. The mark sits atop the Big South standings for the season by over a meter and ranks fourth all-time in Gardner-Webb history.
Thornhill placed second in the 200-meter dash over the weekend, clocking in at a personal-best time of 21.34 seconds. That time is the fastest in the event this season among all Big South competitors and ranks second all-time in school history.
