Men's Soccer Begins 2019 Preseason Camp With Tuesday Morning Session

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Veteran head coach Tony Setzer's men's soccer team opened preseason camp today with a two-hour session on the upper practice fields near Gardner-Webb's softball stadium.
"Everybody is always really excited in the first session," said Setzer. As we have more sessions, fatigue will start to set in. The energy, excitement and enthusiasm were there today. I'm extremely happy with how the session went. If we can get better in each of our next sessions, I'll be very happy."
The Runnin' Bulldogs are coming off a 4-11-1 season that concluded with a 4-4 mark in Big South regular season play and the No. 5 seed in the Big South Conference tournament.
The good news for Setzer and Runnin' Bulldogs is that two of the team's top three statistical leaders return in Oskar Wang and Magnus Moldjord. Wang, a first team All-Big South Conference selection in 2018 appeared in 13 matches and scored three goals while recording too assists. Moldjord scored once but added three assists for five points.
The 'Dogs also return goal scorers Petter Johansen, Edin Hernandez and Alain Delgado. Delgado is one of three captains this season.
"I am so pleased with our captains – Alain (Delgado), Simen Olsen and Rudy Arce. "They're really working hard to get everybody involved and on the same page. They are providing leadership and intensity."
Olsen, a senior, will once again anchor the defense. He was a 2018 Big South All-Conference selection and was also recognized for his work in the classroom with a spot on the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-South Region squad. In addition to maintaining a 3.39 GPA in the classroom, he helped Gardner-Webb shutout four opponents, including Big South foe USC Upstate. Olsen paced Gardner-Webb with 1,379 minutes played last season.
"Our expectations are to qualify for the Big South Conference tournament and hopefully get a high enough seed to host a home match," said Setzer. "Whatever happens beyond that, we'll just have to wait and see."
The Runnin' Bulldogs will kickoff the 2019 regular season on Friday, August 30 at Charlotte (7 p.m.) before traveling to South Carolina on Tuesday, September 3 for a 7 p.m. match. Gardner-Webb's home opener is slated for Friday, September 6 at 6 p.m. against the Furman Paladins. Big South play will begin on September 28 when the 'Dogs host the Longwood Lancers.
