SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb volleyball team dropped each of its two matches Friday, falling in straight sets to Alabama A&M before dropping a four-set decision to North Carolina A&T at the 2019 Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C.
Gardner-Webb (1-7) dropped the first matchup of the day to Alabama A&M by score of 25-8, 25-15, and 25-19. In the nightcap, the Runnin' Bulldogs dropped the opening set to North Carolina A&T (1-7), 25-19, but would answer in set two by a 25-22 score. The Aggies claimed the following two sets, 25-20, and 25-17, to claim the overall match win.
In the opening matchup, GWU totaled 24 attacks on 102 attempts for a .039 hitting percentage, while Alabama A&M collected 42 kills on 99 swings for a .354 hitting percentage.
Maya Jeffcoat-Troy led Gardner-Webb with six kills, while
Abbey Sprinkle provided a team-best 13 assists.
Sprinkle also led the 'Dogs with 10 digs, while
Alexandria Roycraft and
Elizabeth Griffith each had a solo block to lead the team.
Alabama A&M was led on the attack by Karen Asprilla with eight smashes, while Megan Evans totaled a match-high 26 assists.
Maci Battle led the team with 16 digs and Alana Cox led all blockers with four total stops.
In the last matchup of the day, Gardner-Webb totaled 42 kills on 141 swings for a .184 hitting percentage, while N.C. A&T had 63 kills on 159 attempts for a .252 hitting percentage.
Elizabeth Griffith paced the GWU attack, racking up 13 kills, followed closely by
Maria Emmick with 11 smashes.
Lauryn Rocassin dished out a team-high 23 assists.
Rocassin also led the 'Dogs with 10 digs, while
Maya Jeffcoat-Troy had a team-high five total blocks.
The Aggies were paced by Courtney Pitt, who had a match-high 25 kills, while Edie Brewer provided a match-high 34 assists.
Andrea Laboy-Rivera had a match-best 25 digs, while Makaylah Elliott and Shaylynn Hall each had three total blocks.
Gardner-Webb returns to action tomorrow at 11:30 am, taking on tournament host Wofford to wrap up action at the 2019 Wofford Invitational.
