Gardner-Webb Softball Announces 2020 Slate

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Head coach Tom Cole announced the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs spring softball schedule Friday afternoon. The slate contains 56 contests with 32 set to take place in Gardner-Webb's Brinkley Stadium.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will kick off the 2019 campaign in similar fashion to 2018 as they host the Gardner-Webb University/AmericInn Lodge and Suites Tournament. The three-day event will begin on Friday, February 7 and features four teams and 10 games. Gardner-Webb will open the season against Maryland Eastern Shore at 2 p.m. that Friday and will also play Canisius and Youngstown State in the tournament.
Gardner-Webb will hit the road for a doubleheader at Charlotte on Wednesday, February 12, and it will be the only time the 'Dogs hit the road in the month of February. 19 of the Runnin' Bulldogs' first 21 games will be on their home turf.
Starting Friday, February 14, Gardner-Webb will host three consecutive tournaments. The Runnin' Bulldog Softball Tournament Sponsored by AmericInn Lodge and Suites pits Gardner-Webb against Valparaiso, Colgate and Robert Morris. GWU will play five games over the span of three days.
Gardner-Webb will host Eastern Illinois, Northern Kentucky and Mount St. Mary's its third tournament of the year (February 21-23) before hosting Furman, Harvard and NC Central in its fourth and final three-day tournament of the season (February 28-March 1).
After a contest with Furman on March 1, the 'Dogs will not play at home until March 14. Prior to that, they will take two road trips – one to Duke University for a tournament – and another to Campbell University for the start of Big South play.
Starting March 6, Gardner-Webb will play in the Duke University Tournament. The 'Dogs are scheduled to play Howard, Kent State, Fordham and Lafayette and will conclude play with a 4:30 p.m. battle against the host school on Sunday, March 8.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will begin their quest for a Big South regular season championship on March 11 when they travel to Campbell for a mid-week three-game series. The 'Dogs and Fighting Camels will play a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 11 with the series finale set for Thursday, March 12.
Beginning Saturday, March 14, the 'Dogs will play nine Big South contests in nine days. First up, Gardner-Webb will host Hampton (March 14-15) and will recognize military members as part of Military Recognition Day. USC-Upstate will travel to Boiling Springs on March 18-19 and Charleston Southern will visit on March 21-22.
Sandwiched between a March 27-28 road trip to Big South opponent Radford is a pair of non-conference home doubleheaders. Coach Cole and the Runnin' Bulldogs will host Western Carolina (March 25) and North Carolina Central (April 1).
The first conference series in April will take place on April 4-5 when Gardner-Webb travels to defending Big South champion Longwood.
On April 7, the Runnin' Bulldogs will play a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 7 at North Carolina A&T State before closing out the regular season against with a three-game series at Presbyterian (April 18-19) and hosting Winthrop (April 25-26). The doubleheader against Winthrop on Saturday, April 25 is Cancer Awareness Day, and the series finale is set for Sunday, April 26 at 2 p.m.
The six-team Big South Conference tournament will take place in Brinkley Stadium starting on Wednesday, May 6 with the winner-take-all championship set for Saturday, May 9, 2020.
