BOILING SPRINGS –
Jaheam Cornwall,
Eric Jamison, Jr., and
Nate Johnson each scored double figures points in the second half and Gardner-Webb beat Hampton, 81-67, in the conclusion of a suspended game that began on January 20.
Gardner-Webb (13-15, 9-7 Big South) took over sole possession of third place in the Big South with Monday's win.
Johnson finished with 17 points, Jamison scored 13 to go with nine boards and Cornwall scored 13 points for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Jose Perez led the way with 19 points – all scored in the first half on January 20 – and
Kareem Reid just missed a triple-double with 10 points, eight rebounds and a career-high eight blocked shots in a career-high 28 minutes off the bench.
The two teams agreed to suspend the original game at the half on January 20 when a shot clock malfunctioned multiple times. Gardner-Webb led at the break by a 39-31 score and action resumed Monday night with GWU starting the second half on a side out-of-bounds play – 35 days after both teams originally went into the locker room.
The Runnin' Bulldogs seized momentum quickly, making six of their first seven shots from the floor. Back-to-back threes from Cornwall and Johnson pushed Gardner-Webb's lead to 51-35 and forced a Hampton (13-16, 8-8 Big South) timeout with 16:12 to play.
The Pirates would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way and Gardner-Webb led by as many as 21 points in the second half of a comfortable win.
Gardner-Webb shot 48.1 percent in the second half, and finished at 52.9 percent for the game. The 'Dogs made 21-of-28 from the free throw line, a critical stat in a game bogged down by 47 combined fouls, and committed only nine turnovers.
More importantly, Gardner-Webb was stout defensively on Monday evening, limiting Hampton to a cool 29.7 percent from the floor (11-of-37) over the final 20 minutes. Reid's defensive presence on the interior was dominant, as he blocked five of his eight shots in the half and limited Hampton star Ben Stanley to just four points in 20 minutes of action.
Reid also scored eight of his 10 points in the second half and pulled down five of his rebound total.
Stanley led the Pirates with 20 points, Jermaine Marrow battled foul trouble to score 12 of his 17 points in Monday's second half – with six coming on free throws – and Davion Warren scored 12. Hampton's cold shooting half left them at 35.9 percent for the game – including a 5-of-23 effort from long range (21.7 percent).
Hampton's cold shooting did lead to 15 offensive rebounds, but the Pirates only converted those extra chances into eight points.
Gardner-Webb will close out its regular season on the road, traveling first to Charleston, S.C., for a rematch with Charleston Southern on Thursday night. Opening tip is set for 7:30 pm in the Buc Dome. The two teams engaged in a double-overtime thriller in January, with the Buccaneers coming out on top in Boiling Springs.
GWU will close out its regular season on Saturday afternoon at first-place Radford.
