Gardner-Webb Rolls To 19-3 Win Over Howard In 2020 Home Opener

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead, pushed that edge to 13-0 by the half and cruised to a 19-3 win over Howard in Sunday's home opener.

Gardner-Webb (1-1) was able to get in control of the game from the start, scoring twice within the first three minutes of the game to get to an early 2-0 lead with the goals coming from Talen Francis and Jada Preston.

Throughout the rest of the half, the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to turn 11 more of their shots into goals, giving them a 13-0 lead going into halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Gardner-Webb was able to get to score twice within the first minute and a half off goals by Jessica Vetter and Eilish Gately. These goals gave the team a 15-0 lead.

The Bison were able to end their scoring drought at the 25:59 mark in the second half when Josie Mallory was able to score, unassisted.

There were a combined thirteen different goal scorers for the Runnin' Bulldogs, Jada Preston led all goal scorers with three goals. Talen Francis, Hannah Mitchell, Liz Antoshak and Hailey Maranto scored two goals, while Eilish Gately, Tori Birks, Lauren Deaver, Jessica Vetter, Gabby Zerna, Ciarra Ashworth, Megan Trout, and Jayla Middlebrooks all scored one goal apiece.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had eight of their nineteen goals come off assists. Jessica Vetter led the team with two assists, with Talen Francis, Tori Birks, Lauren Deaver, Liz Astoshak, Hailey Maranto, and Gabby Zerna all having one assist apiece.

Gardner-Webb was able to get 24 groundballs while Howard was able to get 12, with Katie Sylvester getting credited for four of them.

Next up for the Runnin' Bulldogs is a home game against Mercer at 7:00 pm in Spangler Stadium.
