Gardner-Webb Pair Earns Big South Conference Weekly Lacrosse Honors
March 10, 2020 | Women's Lacrosse
CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb's Talen Francis and Katie Sylvester were each honored with weekly women's lacrosse awards Tuesday by the Big South Conference.
Francis (Kennesaw, Ga. / Kell HS) continued her early-season tear, scoring nine goals and dishing off a pair of assists to lead Gardner-Webb (5-3) to a pair of non-conference victories.
She scored five goals and handed out an assist in Gardner-Webb's Thursday win over previously unbeaten St. Bonaventure in Spangler Stadium. The All-Big South attacker came through with four goals and another assist Sunday in a 20-0 win over Detroit Mercy.
Francis also notched five draw controls and five caused turnovers on the week, helping Gardner-Webb to its best start through eight games in program history.
Sylvester (Keller, Texas / Keller HS) proved her value in both wins last week, going 2-0 with 17 saves without allowing either opponent to get into double figures scoring. The senior, and team captain, posted seven saves in the win over St. Bonaventure in a 17-9 victory – limiting the Bonnies to only four second-half goals.
On Sunday, she collected 10 saves in a 20-9 win over Detroit Mercy.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Wednesday at VCU. First draw is set for 4:00 pm live on ESPN+.
