JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to go on to hand Gardner-Webb an 8-3 loss on Saturday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb (8-6) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
Joe Brazil led off the frame, sparking a string of five consecutive base hits.
Carter Cunningham drove in Brazil on a double to center field, followed by a RBI single by Keiji Parkhurt and a RBI single by
Ben Rowdon.
The Red Wolves (6-8) scratched in the bottom of the second, scoring once as Jaylon Deshazier grounded into a double play to set the score at 3-1.
Arkansas State seized control of the game in the bottom of the third. Liam Hicks drove in the first run of the inning on a base hit, later followed by a bases-loaded walk by Tyler Duncan to tie the game with no outs.
Back-to-back sacrifice fly balls by Sky-Lar Culver and Will Huber, followed by a RBI single by Deshazier gave ASU a 6-3 lead.
Arkansas State added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to set the score at 8-3.
Jackson (3-1) earned the win for the Red Wolves, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work. Jarrard tossed the final four frames, allowing no runs or hits with six strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.
Isaac Campbell (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Runnin' Bulldogs, giving up eight runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Tyler Harrison tossed the final two frames, allowing no runners to reach while fanning two batters.
Arkansas State collected seven base hits, led by Jake Gish (2-for-4, 3B).
Gardner-Webb totaled six base hits on the day, paced by Cunningham (2-for-4, 2B, RBI).
Both teams meet at 1:00 pm tomorrow afternoon to wrap up the weekend series.
