BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team took on High Point University at Greene-Harbison Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers took the 3-0 shutout win over the Runnin' Bulldogs.
"We have to be better defensively," said head coach
Tony Setzer. "As a team we can't let our opponents break through and get shots in that easily. We tried to take some longer shot attempts tonight, but still need to push the ball up the field with more urgency."
Alex Abril scored twice for the Panthers tonight, netting goals in the 11
th and 31
st minutes off of passes from MD Myers and Caco Fernandez. Myers also found the net for HPU for their third and final goal of the night in the 47
th minute of match play.
High Point paced the matchup in shots with 22, Gardner-Webb took five. Starters
Owen Zaldivar,
Kharrel Medza, and
Pa Njie each recorded a shot, while teammates
Cole Sanfilippo and
Giampaolo Nardi each recorded a single shot off the bench.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had four corner kick opportunities throughout the night, with the Panthers having just one more. GWU led with eight fouls, as HPU had just three.
The 'Dogs will be back in action on Wednesday, October 6
th as they travel to Buies Creek to take on conference foe Campbell University. Match time is slated for 6 pm.
