Cádiz, Spain – Former Gardner-Webb men's soccer player Pedro Benito made his La Liga debut on Saturday, October 2
nd for Cádiz FC, a Spanish professional soccer club located in Cádiz, Spain, as they faced Valencia at home inside Nuevo Mirandilla Stadium.
"Pedro grew up in Cadiz, Spain and his father played there. It's a lifelong dream come true for him," said head coach
Tony Setzer, who coached Beinto for one season in 2019. "We were so delighted to have Pedro come through Gardner-Webb, but even more excited for his future and what is to come."
The former Runnin' Bulldog striker officially entered the match in the 60
th minute, as Benito subbed in for Alvaro Negredo and played the remaining 30. While Valencia held him in check without a shot allowed, Benito still managed to apply pressure and drew three fouls on the day.
"Pedro is an outstanding young man, during his time at Gardner-Webb he was one of our leading scorers," continued Setzer. "He was a very dynamic player on the field. Pedro was always working diligently to perfect his craft, and it shows for his success today. I'm so delighted for Pedro making his first appearance in La Liga – that's just an awesome accomplishment. I give credit to Pedro for his work ethic and it was just a privilege to work with him."
During Benito's time with Gardner-Webb, the potent attacker played in 19 matches and started all but two, recording five goals and three assists for a total of 13 points. During the 2019 campaign at GWU, Benito earned Second-Team All-State NCCSIA and Second-Team All-Big South honors.
In December 2020, Benito graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Gardner-Webb University.
