LEXINGTON, Va. – Gardner-Webb Men's Soccer opened their season with a 5-0 sweep over VMI on Sunday Afternoon. This is the 12
th time that the Runnin' Bulldogs and the Keydets have battled it out on the pitch, and the 10
th career win over VMI for Head Coach
Tony Setzer.
Abel Gebrekiros led the team netting two goals for the Dog's. Gebrekiros first goal game just after the 30-minute mark off an assist from Ryan Mandondo, and his second goal of the day came in the 44-minute mark with an assisted pass from teammate
Owen Zaldivar.
Hendrik Kortgodde opened the scoring just 10 minutes into play of the contest, and
Nicolas Engelking added one for himself just three minutes before halftime.
To further seal the dub for the Runnin' Bulldogs,
Owen Zaldivar landed one in the net off a pass from Ryan Madando nine minutes into the second half of gameplay.
In the contest the Runnin' Bulldogs outshot the Keydets 21-4, with 11 of those on target for Gardner-Webb and two of those on target for VMI.
In goal,
Mallel Rios spent the full 90 minutes between the posts, having just two saves in the match.
