Gardner-Webb Bests Winthrop, 66-50, Monday Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - A trio of Runnin' Bulldogs reached double-digits in scoring Monday night to lead Gardner-Webb to a 66-50 win over visiting Winthrop in Big South Conference play inside Paul Porter Arena.
Gardner-Webb (7-11, 7-6 Big South) was 26-of-68 (38.2 percent) from the floor, including 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) from long distance. Winthrop (6-13, 5-11 Big South) was 18-of-50 (36.0 percent) and 3-of-9 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Runnin' Bulldogs took advantage of 26 turnovers by the Eagles, scoring 33 points, while Winthrop managed just nine points on 13 GWU miscues. Gardner-Webb also outscored Winthrop in the paint, 32-22, and on the fast break, 17-5.
Lauren Bevis paced the GWU offense with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-9 from behind the three-point line, and also had a team-high three assists and five steals. Jhessyka Williams added 18 points on a 7-of016 effort with seven boards, while Alasia Smith scored 13 points with a team-best eight rebounds.
Myra Strickland was Winthrop's leading scorer with 17 points on 4-of-12 shooting, including an 8-of-10 effort from the free throw line. Tori Hall added 10 points from the bench.
Gardner-Webb remains home for its next contest, hosting Longwood in the first game of the two-game Big South Conference series. Action begins Friday night at 6:00 pm inside Paul Porter Arena with live coverage on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com / ESPN App).
