Gardner-Webb Fall Short in Road Trip to Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb dropped their match at Wofford on a 6-1 decision. The loss puts the Runnin' Bulldogs at 1-4 on the season.
 
"Need to give credit to Wofford for their performance, they did what they needed and worked hard," said Head Coach Mike Griffith. "I liked the effort and energy from Butler and was good to see Connor get a win."
 
The Terriers won all three doubles matches on the day. Breno Plentz and Alex Griffiths lost 6-2 in the #1 flight. Wofford clinched the doubles point when Ashe Ray and Will Fullett defeated Victor Putter and Cathal Butler in the #3 position. To conclude doubles action, Sebastian Harris and Chrisjan Van Wyk lost a close 6-4 match.
 
Starting off singles matches, Plentz lost in the #2 position 6-0, 6-1 to Wofford's Ray. In the #5 flight, Gardner-Webb's Connor Enslin secured the team's lone point of the day with a 6-1, 1-4 decision. Harris was defeated in the #4 match, 6-3, 6-2.
 
Wofford clinched the match in the #6 position when Alex Horn defeated Butler 7-5, 6-4. The Terriers won the remaining two matches of the day. In the #3 flight, Van Wyk was defeated 6-3, 6-2. The day concluded with a narrow three-set loss for Putter in the #1 position, 6-7, 7-6, 10-5.
 
"Good news is that we have four straight home matches, and I am looking forward to it starting on Saturday," said Griffith.
 
This weekend, the team will begin a four-game homestand, two of the matches are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the Runnin' Bulldogs matchup against Georgia Southern with a start time of 1:00 p.m. and play the following day against Belmont at 12:30 p.m.
