BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb lost 7-0 to Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon to fall to 1-5 on the season.
"We started very slow in doubles but came back and had the opportunity to win the first point," said Head Coach
Mike Griffith.
Doubles action started with
Sebastian Harris and
Cathal Butler losing 6-1 in the #2 position.
Victor Putter and
Chrisjan Van Wyk won the #1 flight 6-4 to force the doubles point to come down to the last match. Georgia Southern clinched the doubles point when Valentin Dun and Carter French defeated
Breno Plentz and
Stefano Puga 7-5.
"Singles effort was way better than the last match, but it was still not good enough," said Griffith.
Georgia Southern won all six singles matches. Van Wyk lost in the #2 position 6-4, 6-3. In the #6 flight, Butler fell 6-4,6-3.
Georgia Southern clinched the match when Tao Castillo won against Harris 6-2, 7-5.
Connor Enslin played in the #5 singles match and lost 6-4, 6-4. In the #1 position, Putter was defeated 7-6(2), 6-3. The day concluded with Plentz losing to Dun 5-7, 6-1, 11-9.
"We have to keep playing matches, fortunately, we have a lot more time to improve, but we need to aggressively take what our competition is giving us, and, if we do, we will get awarded," said Griffith.
Next up for the Runnin' Bulldogs are home matches next weekend. On the 27th, the team opens conference play against Campbell at 1:00 p.m. The following day, the 28th, they face College of Charleston with a start at 1:00 p.m.
