Petra Jakeljic & Kenny VanVorst Take Home Gold In Hammer Throw On First Day of Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championship

HIGH POINT, N.C. – On Monday afternoon Gardner-Webb competed in their first day of action at the 2021 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which was highlighed by a pair of gold medal finishes in the men's and women's hammer.
Starting off the championship meet in winning fashion, Petra Jakeljic took home first place for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the women's hammer by hitting a mark of 57.78 meters.
Kenny VanVorst also took home the gold in the men's hammer throw for GWU by hitting a mark of 60.23 meters. This marks a personal best for VanVorst in the event.
In the women's heptathlon, Taylor Hotchkiss currently sits in fifth place with 2,562 points. In the 100-meter hurdles Hotchkiss finished in fifth place with a time of 15.02 seconds. Hotchkiss placed fifth in the high jump by hitting a mark of 1.41 meters. For the shot put, Hotchkiss took sixth by hitting a mark of 7.93 meters. In the fourth event of the heptathlon, Hotchkiss placed sixth in the 200 meters by finishing with a time of 27.58 seconds.
Gardner-Webb Track & Field will be back in action tomorrow Tuesday, May 11th for day two of the 2021 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
