BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb dropped a 7-6 decision at Winthrop in the final midweek game of the season on Tuesday afternoon at the Winthrop Ballpark.
Gardner-Webb (26-20, 25-12 Big South) trailed Winthrop (18-25, 15-19 Big South) by a 6-1 score at play headed to the top of the sixth inning.
The Runnin' Bulldogs began to rally, with
Patrick Ferguson and
Dom Peroni each reaching to lead off the inning to later set up a three-run home run for
Ben LaSpaluto, his fifth home run of the season.
GWU tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-run knock down the left field line by LaSpaluto.
Winthrop would answer in the bottom of the seventh as a sacrifice fly by Spencer Yankle plated Scout McFalls, who led off the frame with a double.
Gardner-Webb totaled 11 hits on the day, led by a 4-for-4 effort by
Eric Jones. LaSpaluto finished 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBI.
Langdon Wilson (4-2) took the loss for the Runnin' Bulldogs, giving up one run on one hit with one strikeout in two innings of work. Starter
Casey Young lasted four innings, giving up two runs on four base hits while striking out three batters.
Winthrop had ten hits, led by McFalls (3-for-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI).
Jason Crumley (2-3) earned the win for the Eagles, allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work. Cody Whitten lasted five innings, allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts. Macklin Ohs tossed the final two innings, allowing no runs on one hit with a pair of strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.
Gardner-Webb returns home for the final weekend series of the season, hosting Radford. The series begins Thursday at 5pm and will wrap up Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 1pm. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com / ESPN App).
