BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. –
Dom Peroni hit a pair of home runs, including a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to lift Gardner-Webb past Radford, 10-8, to open the final weekend of the 2021 regular season Thursday night at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.
Gardner-Webb (27-20, 26-12 Big South) trailed Radford (22-22, 16-18 Big South) by a 3-0 score as play headed to the bottom of the fourth inning.
With runners on second and third and two outs,
Joe Brazil produced the first GWU run of the day on an infield single, followed by a three-run home run by Peroni to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 4-3 advantage.
The momentum carried through to the fifth inning.
Mitch McLendon led off with a double to the right field gap, followed by an RBI single by
Ben LaSpaluto. GWU would load the bases with two outs to set up a grand slam for Peroni, giving him five home runs on the season and a 9-3 lead for the 'Dogs.
Radford began to trim at Gardner-Webb's lead in the top of the seventh, plating runs on back-to-back RBI doubles by Sean Cheely and David Bryant, but GWU would again answer in the bottom half of the inning, scoring once on a leadoff home run by
Keiji Parkhurst, his team-best 13
th home run of 2021, setting the score at 10-5.
The Highlanders again attempted to rally in the top of the ninth, scoring once on a RBI single by Bryant and a two-run home run with two outs by Will Harless, but GWU reliever
Isaac Campbell fanned Jalen Buster to end the game.
Gardner-Webb totaled 12 base hits, placed by Peroni's 2-for-2 effort with two home runs, seven RBI, and two runs scored. McLendon, LaSpaluto, and
Patrick Ferguson also had two-hit outings.
Mason Miller (7-1) earned the win on the mound for the Runnin' Bulldogs, allowing three runs on six base hits with 10 strikeouts in six innings in the start. With his first strikeout of the inning, Miller earned his 100
th strikeout of the season, becoming just the seventh GWU pitcher to reach that milestone and the first since Brad Haymes in 2016.
Isaac Campbell recorded the final seven outs, allowing three runs on five base hits with five strikeouts to record his seventh save of the season.
Radford collected 13 hits throughout the contests, led by 3-for-5 outings by both Cheely and Bryant.
Tyler Bowes (0-2) took the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts in four innings in the start. Landon Higgerson allowed three runs on one hit in one inning from the bullpen, and Storm Mace tossed the final three innings, giving up one run on three hits with four strikeouts.
Both teams meet tomorrow in doubleheader action beginning at 1:00 pm to wrap up the 2021 regular season. Both games are slated to be broadcast on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com / ESPN App).
