Gardner-Webb Football Announces Staff Changes Heading Into 2021 Season

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb football announced an addition to its staff on Tuesday, as well as a promotion, heading into the 2021 season.

The Runnin' Bulldogs welcomed Run Game Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach Joe Scelfo to the program. Current assistant coach Taylor Lamb was elevated to Offensive Coordinator and will continue to coach the team's quarterbacks.

Scelfo spent two seasons coaching the guards and centers at nationally-ranked Southeast Louisiana.

In each of his last two seasons, the Lions ranked among the national leaders in total offense, ranking second in 2019 (484.8 ypg) and seventh in 2020-21 (508.6 ypg). Southeastern Louisiana also boasted the nation's No. 2 passing offense in both seasons and in the top-10 nationally both seasons in first down offense and scoring offense.

In 2020-2021, Scelfo's interior line helped power an offense that converted 51.9 percent on third down (6th nationally) and ranked No. 9 in red zone offense (92.9%). The unit also protected the nation's top quarterback, as Cole Kelley won the 2021 Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Center Drew Jones and guard Ethan McMullen each earned All-Southland honors following the 2021 season and McMullen was named second-team All-Louisiana. The Lions finished the spring sprint ranked No. 20 in the final STATS FCS national poll.

In 2019, Scelfo mentored All-Southland selection Jarius Gooch.

Scelfo's first coaching spot came at NC State, where he served as a graduate assistant in 2018. He played for the Wolfpack as a graduate transfer center in 2016, starting all 13 games under the direction of highly-respected offensive line coach – and former Gardner-Webb offensive line coach – Dwayne Ledford. Scelfo led the team with 51 knockdown blocks and was named the Wolfpack's Most Valuable Offensive Lineman.

Scelfo previously played college football at South Alabama, where he was named first-team All-Sun Belt in 2015. He started all 49 games during his career with the Jaguars and Wolfpack. He signed as a free agent with the NFL Houston Texans following his playing career.

The Bogart, Ga., native was an All-State selection at North Oconee High and was rated as the nation's No. 12 center prospect. He is the son of former Tulane head coach Chris Scelfo – a veteran of the profession with more than 30 years in the college and pro ranks.

Scelfo earned his undergraduate degree from South Alabama in 2016.

Lamb recently finished his first season with the Runnin' Bulldogs, where he helped guide a young offense to a pair of productive efforts in early-season wins over No. 24 Elon and Presbyterian. GWU averaged 443.0 yards per game during that stretch, ranking in the top-15 nationally in third down conversions, scoring (36.5 ppg), rushing offense, completion percentage and first down offense.

Lamb's first taste of coaching came on the staff at South Carolina, where he spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as a graduate assistant with the Gamecocks' offense.

He enjoyed a legendary college career at nearby Appalachian State, quarterbacking the Mountaineers program into one of the nation's most consistent FBS programs. Lamb finished his college career ranked first in the program's history with 90 touchdown passes in 51 games (49 starts). He also ranked first in Sun Belt Conference history by the end of his time in Boone.

A true dual threat, Lamb passed for nearly 10,000 yards (9,786), rushed for 2,008 yards and accounted for 113 total touchdowns. He finished his time at Appalachian State second to Armanti Edwards in the record books with 11,794 yards of total offense and 36 wins under center.

As a senior he was named Offensive MVP of the Dollar General Bowl. It was the third of three bowl wins for Lamb as the Mountaineers' quarterback.

Lamb was named Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year in 2014 after shattering several freshman passing records. He passed for 2,381 yards and 17 scores that season, setting the stage for what was to come.

Lamb graduated from Appalachian State with a degree in physical education in December 2017.

As a high school senior at Calhoun (Ga.) High, Lamb was named Georgia's Gatorade Player of the Year and was rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports.com. A MaxPreps second-team small school All-America selection that season, Lamb passed for 3,498 yards and 26 touchdowns as a senior.

Coaching, and success in coaching, runs in the family for Lamb. His grandfather, Ray Lamb, is a Georgia Hall of Famer after a forging a storied career in the Peach State's high school ranks. His father, Bobby Lamb, enjoyed a successful career as head coach at Furman and Mercer. His uncle, Hal Lamb, posted one of Georgia's top coaching careers at Calhoun (Ga.) High and cousin Tre Lamb is the head coach at Gardner-Webb.
