DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson defeated Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon for the Wildcats to claim their first victory of the season.
"We needed to win just one more set to come out on top, but in the end, Davidson was better today and got the win," said Head Coach
Mike Griffith.
The Runnin' Bulldogs started the day claiming a win in the #3 position in doubles.
Cathal Butler and
John Spring won the match 6-2. The Wildcats responded with wins in the other matches to claim the point. Davidson won in the #2 flight 6-3 and clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win in the #1 position.
Eduardo Dias made his debut for the 'Dogs in the #3 position and lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
Victor Putter secured the first team point for Gardner-Webb with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Juan Gongora. Davidson got their third point of the day after Alejandro Solares beat
Chrisjan Van Wyk 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
Sebastian Harris won his matchup at #4, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 to keep the match alive. The Wildcats clinched the victory as Brooks Green defeated
Connor Enslin 6-4, 7-5. The #6 match went unfinished, but GWU's Spring was leading 7-6, 2-0.
"Moving forward, we are happy to have Eduardo in here as he is going to do well for us moving forward," said Griffith.
Gardner-Webb now will prepare for its first home match of the season as they will host Wofford on Wednesday, January 26 at 2:30.
