GWU Defeats Wofford in Home Opener for First Victory of the Season

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb clinched their first win of the season on Wednesday afternoon in their home opener against Wofford College. The final score for the match was 5-2. Senior, Sebastian Harris clinched the doubles point and fourth team point with his singles victory to claim the team's win.
 
"It was a very close match, and we knew that coming in that Wofford would play at a high level," said Head Coach Mike Griffith. "I was pleased to see how we responded after losing a close match on Sunday."
 
Gardner-Webb won the #3 doubles match with Cathal Butler and John Spring partnered to win 6-4. In the other two matches, tiebreakers were needed to declare winners in them. Bryce Keim and Callum Rendle won 7-6 (7) over Victor Putter and Chrisjan Van Wyk in the top match. Connor Enslin and Harris won the #2 flight 7-6 (5) to give GWU its first point of the day.
 
To start singles play, Alex Lepine won his first match as a Runnin' Bulldog 6-3, 6-3 over Will Fullett in the #5 match. Wofford responded with wins by Max Graham in the #6 position and Ashe Ray in the top spot, to even the score at 2-2.
 
Gardner-Webb went on to win the remaining three singles matches to get the team's first win of the year. Eduardo Dias won his first match with GWU on a 6-4, 6-2 decision in the #4 flight. Harris clinched the win with a 7-5, 6-3 battle in the #3 position. The day ended with Putter defeating Mark Endler 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
 
"I am proud of our team's performance today and am happy to see two of our newcomers get their first career college wins," said Griffith.
 
Next up for the Runnin' Bulldogs is a home match against Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday with a start scheduled for 2:30 p.m. followed by the team also hosting Lees-McRae the next day.
