Women’s Basketball Defeated By USC Upstate Tuesday Night, 71-68

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team fell to USC Upstate on Tuesday evening. The Spartans managed to steal the win with a jumper and a trio of free throws with just 12 seconds left in the game. The final score was 71-68, in favor of USC Upstate.

Gardner-Webb (7-12, 5-3) shot 38.9% (21-for-54) from the floor, 22.2% (4-for-18) from beyond the arc, and 78.6% (22-for-28) at the charity stripe. The Runnin' Bulldogs capitalized off 30 points in the pain, 13 points off of turnovers, and 12 second-chance points.

USC Upstate (12-5, 4-2) shot 47.3% (22-for-55) in field-goal range, 47.1% (8-for-17) from the three-point line, and 78.6% (11-for-14) at the free-throw line. The Spartans scored 34 points in the paint, 13 points off of turnovers, and 10 second-chance points.

Jhessyka Williams led the scoring efforts for the 'Dogs tonight with 16 points (6-13 FG, 0-2 3PT, 4-5 FT), three steals, and a single block.

Freshman Layken Cox had herself a night on the hardwood, scoring 9 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Tonight was Cox's first start while in Big South play and her second career start for the Red and Black.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday, January 29, as they host North Carolina A&T at home inside Paul Porter Arena at 2:00 p.m. The action will stream live on ESPN+ and over the airwaves of the Runnin' Bulldogs Sports Network.
