CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb football had three men earn Big South Conference weekly awards on Monday following the team's road win at Charleston Southern.
Quarterback
Bailey Fisher (Clayton, Ga. / Rabun County HS) was named Offensive Player of the Week, linebacker
Brendan Jackson (Statesboro, Ga. / Statesboro HS) was named Defensive Player of the Week and running back
Jayden Brown (Lithonia, Ga. / Miller Grove HS) was named Freshman of the Week.
Fisher set a new career-high passing total with 408 yards through the air and finished Gardner-Webb's win at Charleston Southern with 452 yards of total offense and two touchdowns accounted for in a comfortable victory. It was the third time this season he has been named Big South Offensive Player of the Week – the highest total in the league.
Fisher tied the Big South single-game mark for passing yards in a league game, drawing even with Liberty's Stephen Calvert (408 yards at Monmouth on October 21, 2017). It is the second-most passing yards in Gardner-Webb's Division I history, surpassing Fisher's own 403 yards earlier this season at Coastal Carolina.
The game marked Fisher's third with at least 350 yards passing over the past two seasons.
His five-yard touchdown run in the third quarter pushed Gardner-Webb up 28-7 and the Runnin' Bulldogs went into cruise control from there. Fisher's efforts enginerred 637 yards of total offense for GWU, it's most ever in a Big South game and most ever against an NCAA Division I opponent.
In two Big South games to date, Fisher has completed 46-of-65 passes for 651 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He has also rushed for two scores in leading Gardner-Webb to its second Big South win in as many tries this season.
Jackson's sack on fourth down in the fourth quarter puncutated Gardner-Webb's defense and its handling of Charleston Southern for the majority of Saturday night's victory.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder added two tackles for loss and a pass break up, along with five solo stops for a group that saw the field for just 64 snaps due to its offense dominating time of possession.
The 'Dogs allowed just 279 yards overall – with 83 coming on one play – and limited CSU to just 3-of-14 on third down. After an early rushing touchdown that netted 83 yards, Jackson and the GWU defense allowed just 32 rushing yards on 26 carries the rest of the way.
Brown continued to shine against Big South Conference foes, carrying 14 times for a career-high 92 yards and a 44-yard touchdown in Gardner-Webb's second league win. It was his second Freshman of the Week accolade in 2022, and marked the fifth time in eight weeks that a GWU player has secured that honor.
He averaged 6.6 yards per attempt, gaining many of those yards in the second half. His 44-yard sprint early in the third quarter put Gardner-Webb up 20-7 as the visitors pulled away. In two Big South games to date, Brown has carried 24 times for 177 yards and three scores, averaging a healthy 7.4 yards per attempt.
Gardner-Webb finished the longest road swing in program history with a 2-2 mark and rolls into homecoming weekend at 2-0 in the Big South since doing so in 2009. In doing so, GWU has produced 605.5 yards of total offense in its two wins while limiting two opponents to an average of only 228.0 yards per game.
