Gardner-Webb Drops Season Finale At Radford

RADFORD, Va. – Gardner-Webb ended their season on Saturday afternoon at Radford following a 3-1 defeat. The Highlanders won the first, dropped the second, and won the next two to move into a tie for fourth with Charleston Southern in the Big South standings.
"It was a frustrating end to a good season for us. We played a strong High Point team and Radford that has found their rhythm," said head Coach Eric Plunkett. "Both of our opponents executed cleaner and more consistently than us.
In the first set, Gardner-Webb took a 10-7 lead after a 7-0 scoring spurt. The Highlanders responded immediately with a 6-0 run of their own for a 15-11 advantage. GWU drew even at 19, but Radford scored another six unanswered to claim the first 25-19.
The second set saw the Runnin' Bulldogs gain an early 8-4 advantage and Radford drew even after a 4-0 scoring stretch. The teams continued to trade points through the rest of the set until GWU claimed the win at 25-23 on a kill by Kylee Garrison.
The Highlanders raced out to an early lead in the third and cruised to a 25-15 win in the set to go up 2-1 overall. In the fourth, Radford claimed a quick 3-0 lead and were able to keep GWU behind for most of the set. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored four unanswered to tie it at 23-23, but Shelby Hernandez of RU had a service ace to seal the win.
Garrison led the team offensively with 14 kills and 17 points. She added two service aces, two blocks, and nine digs to finish her five-year career at Gardner-Webb. McKenna Timmerman added ten kills and hit .292 on the day while Mikayla Logan had nine kills. Delaney McCullough finished without any attack errors to go along with six kills and a .333 hitting percentage. McCullough also tied her season-high in total blocks with eight.
Morgan Hornaday finished her freshman campaign with a 32-assist outing, three aces, and nine digs. Sophia Kotsovolos had 21 digs to conclude her first year at Gardner-Webb.
