CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb picked up a 71-55 win at Western Carolina to close out the Runnin' Bulldogs' seven-game road trip to start the season. The 'Dogs had four players finish in double figures with
Kareem Reid leading the way with 15 points.
GWU got out to an early lead and were able to stretch the lead out to as many as 23 during the evening. Gardner-Webb never surrendered the lead after breaking a 4-4 tie three minutes into the game. They were in front for almost 39 minutes of the game's action during the evening.
GWU went on a 7-0 run in the middle of the first half over a minute to put the Catamounts at bay. The 'Dogs had a 36-21 lead going into the halftime break. The second half saw the two teams trade baskets with GWU never allowing WCU within single digits the rest of the way.
Reid led the team in scoring and finished 7-9 from the floor.
Anthony Selden and DQ Nicholas each poured in 14 points and pulled down four boards with Selden knocking down a pair of three-pointers.
Julien Soumaoro scored 11 and had six rebounds. Lucas Steiber had the top marks on the team in rebounding (7) and assists (4).
The Runnin' Bulldogs held Western Carolina to a 34.1% (15-44) mark from the floor. GWU beat the Catamounts on the board gaining a 36-29 advantage on the glass.
Gardner-Webb will have their home opener on Saturday, December 3 hosting Chattanooga with a tipoff now scheduled for noon. The start time for the game was moved up to allow GWU fans who aren't making the trip to Williamsburg, Va. to watch the football team take on William & Mary in the FCS Playoffs the chance to attend the basketball game and watch the playoff game on EPSN+.
