CHARLOTTE – The Big South Conference announced the winners of their weekly volleyball awards on Monday afternoon. Gardner-Webb's Sophia Kotsovolos was selected as the league's freshman of the week after finishing a weekend with an average of almost five digs per set.
Kotsovolos finished Friday's 3-1 win against Presbyterian with 23 digs, her highest total in a four-set match in her career. She led all players in the game in digs and service aces (5) and added six assists. The victory marked the most conference wins (7) and consecutive conference wins (4) in program history. On Saturday, she added 11 digs and three assists in the 3-0 loss to Winthrop. Kotsovolos has posted at least ten digs in each of the past 13 matches.
This is the second award that Kotsovolos has won from the conference this year. On October 3 she earned libero of the week when she had an average of 5.25 digs per set between the team's two wins over USC Upstate and UNC Asheville. This is the fifth time a Runnin' Bulldog has been named the freshman of the week this season.
Gardner-Webb concludes the regular season this weekend with a pair of games traveling to High Point (12-2) on Friday and Radford (6-8) on Saturday. The 'Dogs are currently in a tie for fourth in the league with Charleston Southern (7-7). The Big South Tournament will be contested the following weekend at High Point with the top-four teams advancing to the event.
